Sin is Crouching At Your Door (Genesis 4:6-8)

March 20, 2026

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Many of us have read through the Genesis narrative of Cain and Abel a few times before. It's the very first story told to us immediately following the events of Adam and Eve's sin. If we've ever wondered if God had overreacted to the eating of the forbidden fruit, the account of Cain and Abel will surely ease our concerns. We learn quickly that the Lord was not exaggerating in his estimation of sin. More than anyone, God understood that sin's very existence poses a dangerous threat to humanity.

Cain brought an offering to the Lord that was unacceptable and the Bible doesn't definitively state why he was rejected. One reason could have been a lack of obedience on Cain's part. Some have suggested that God may have prescribed the right manner for presenting offerings to the boys beforehand and Cain just chose his own method. Or, the issue could have been the state of Cain's heart and not the offering at all. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that Cain fell short of God's standards and completely lost his way because of it.

If we read the account closely, it becomes clear that Cain had two main issues. He greatly overestimated his own good intentions and he severely underestimated the vicious nature of sin. He thought his efforts were good enough and he believed that his offering was inherently righteous. It was this misconception that fueled the fiery jealousy that would begin to burn inside of him.

We are all more like Cain than we are willing to admit. These same two issues are what pervade the human soul and wage war within our flesh every day. We are prone to seeing ourselves as better than we are, and it makes us blind to our own flaws and selfish desires. It is precisely because of that blindness that we become unaware of the spiritual threat upon our lives. We leave ourselves vulnerable and wide open to any attack that will inevitably come. The Lord's warning to Cain are the words that must pierce our ears, "Sin is crouching at your door and it desires to have you!" Sin stalks each of us in the background, waiting for the exact opportunity to drag us away. It has no remorse for sinners and will ruthlessly take from us until we are willing to end it.

Think back to all of your moments of weakness and grievous sins. Were they not the moments where you had let your guard down? They didn't happen by accident, they were the result of our own negligence. Thankfully, God has given us the answer to this dark predicament. We must rule over sin before it comes to rule over us. We don't have to fall victim to our desires as Cain did, we can overcome! We have been handed the victory from our triumphant Saviour and in His grace, we can offer ourselves as instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:13). Walk in His power today and stand on guard. Remember that sin will always be out there, crouching at our door.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, I have greatly underestimated the power of sin in my life. I see it now for the enemy that it is. Help me not to dishonour your holy name. Show me where I have let my guard down. Fill me with the power of your Spirit to overcome each and every day. Amen.
