20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us
It’s easy to get used to the idea that God created the heavens and the earth, until we pause and read Genesis 1 again, in its entirety, and allow ourselves to marvel once more at the unfathomable power of God. The very first words of the Bible are the epic opening to the story that God Himself is the author of, and as such, they set the tone for everything God reveals about Himself throughout the rest of Scripture. As we read verse 1, our divine author paints the scene that He alone was privy to, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” He then explains that “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.” It was a dreary, gloomy scene, with nothing but emptiness and utter darkness. There was nothing to see, nothing to excite us. Except, our divine author reveals that “the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters,” and that one line, that one truth was enough to change everything. What happened next was the marvellous, incredible, breathtaking unfolding of light, life and order from darkness, nothingness and chaos.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” And the Genesis creation account is both profitable and essential to our understanding of God as Creator, as the One who can call forth light where only darkness exists, and life where only barrenness is present. He is the God who works in the most hopeless of situations and sees potential for glory where no one else can. Being the Creator of the heavens and the earth means God is sovereign over death and broken situations. If He can create a universe from scratch with no other ingredients but formlessness and disorder, then He can certainly heal and restore and repair and make new the broken, chaotic parts of our lives.
Genesis 1 teaches us that it’s not unlike God to do the unimaginable, the unforeseeable, the undreamed-of thing in our lives, because He is by name and nature the Creator. He encompasses creativity and forethought and knows how to bring light out of darkness and order out of chaos. Today be assured that the same God who hung the stars in their rightful place and commanded the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night is the same God who sees our lives as a canvas for His glory. And He will glorify Himself in the void places of our lives if we’ll let Him, no fancy ingredients necessary.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, how great and marvellous are the works of your hand. Today, I stand in awe of the majestic power you hold over our universe and ultimately, over my heart. Increase my faith to believe and trust when the darkness creeps in. Help me to lift my eyes to you no matter the season and no matter the circumstance. Amen.
